The payers listed below have reported the following:

To enhance Member privacy, Tricare is transitioning from the 9-digit Social Security Number (SSN) to the 11-digit Department of Defense Benefit Number (DBN). (Tricare serves Uniformed Service members and their families.)

However, on the newly formatted Military and Family Member ID card, the 10-digit Department of Defense ID number replaces the 9-digit SSN on the front of the ID card. This 10-digit Department of Defense number is NOT to be used for Tricare billing. Please use either the legacy 9-digit SSN (not on the new ID card) or the new 11-digit DBN which is located on the back of the new ID card.

The H65 edit for "Invalid Member ID" will post when presented with a 10-digit number or a number containing dashes.

Please review your systems to ensure that Tricare only receives the appropriately formatted 9-digit SSN or 11-digit DBN. If you have any questions, please call Tricare at 800-325-5920, Option 2.

Payers affected are:

CPID 4456 Tricare North and South Region
CPID 6594 Tricare North Region
CPID 8503 Tricare South Region

Action Required: Do not use the 10-digit Department of Defense number for Tricare billing. Use either the SSN or the DBN.

If you have any questions, please contact Client Services at 1-888-348-8457, option 2.
