News from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA):

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched its website that eligible professionals (EPs) can use to apply for an exemption from the 2012 penalties of the Medicare electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) incentive program. Those EPs who are not successful e-prescribers or who are not granted an exemption will face a 1 percent payment decrease for all Part B-covered professional services under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule starting Jan. 1, 2012. In 2013 and 2014, the penalty increases to 1.5 percent and 2.0 percent respectively. CMS may exempt EPs from this penalty if it determines that compliance with the requirements for successfully e-prescribing would result in a significant hardship. This hardship exemption is subject to annual renewal.

MGMA will host a Webinar, Prevent 2012 Medicare e-prescribing Penalties, on September 29 to walk participants through the final rule on e-prescribing and highlight the exemption categories and changes to the program.
